This past Thursday, members of the Topsfield Fire Department along with a handful of bystanders were honored for their respective parts in the resuscitation of a man in cardiac arrest late last year. The Massachusetts Region III North East Emergency Medical Services Inc., a non-profit organization, awarded the group this year’s “Group Save” Award. This award is given to a group of providers whose actions resulted in saving a life. The incident in question occurred last December as members were preparing to drop Santa Claus off at the Town’s annual Holiday on the Green. As crews arrived, they found three bystanders performing CPR on the victim. Those three bystanders were Lt Bob Bergeron from Beverly Fire, Megan Watson, RN, and Kristen Iovanella, P.A. Comforting the victim’s wife and calling 911 were bystanders Holly Jones and Donna Bergeron. From the bystanders to the crews who responded, every person present played a critical role in the chain of survival of a cardiac arrest. Accompanied at the presentation ceremony were non other than the patient, now a cardiac arrest survivor, Aaron Herman and his wife Lisa. Aaron is now one of a growing number of people who can call themselves survivors of a cardiac arrest with no neurological deficit. This success comes from the willingness and readiness of bystanders to perform life-saving CPR until EMTs and Paramedics from Topsfield Fire arrived to perform correctional interventions. The Topsfield Fire Department is very thankful for the recognition of these members of our team and the people who stopped to save a stranger’s life. We encourage anyone at all to take the time to learn CPR. These people were no more equipped than any other civilian bystander and were able to successfully bridge the gap between a cardiac arrest and the arrival of Emergency Medical Services. We are also proud of our staff, most of whom are call firefighters that come in as needed for emergencies at all hours of the day and night. They continue to maintain a high level of training and performance in their dedication to public safety.
